August Update

Nastya Surgery Update

Nastya Devyatova was in Kharkov last week for a check-up following her hip surgery.

The good news is that her recovery is progressing well and that she no longer needs the crutches, she has been told that she can now use a walking stick instead. Ira has informed me she has now purchased Nastya a walking stick and will hopefully have a photo ready for the next update.

TB Sanatorium Update

Ira had a request from the TB Centre for some items for the children there. The biggest need was for underwear for the children but they also asked for some jotters for the children for the start of the new school term. Of course we were happy to help in providing these items for the TB Centre.

Over and above the request from the TB Centre, we also asked Ira to provide some toys and games for the children as well.

A selection of toys to suit varying age groups was delivered to the Centre and Ira tells us that, despite the bright sunshine, you could see the children’s faces light up.

Odinkovka and Tabachnaya Summer Camps

The children from the orphanages are currently off enjoying their summer camp trips to the Crimea. Ira was at the Tabachnaya orphanage to help see the children off on their trip. Ira tells us that the kids were certainly excited about their holiday.

Graduations at Odinkovka

At the end of this month there will be eight of the sponsored children leaving the Odinkovka orphanage to go study at college. As part of the support provided by the Dnipro Appeal we will once again be providing these children with leaving packs (containing bedding, pots, cutlery and other essential items) to help make their move to college accommodation a bit easier.

Committee member John Divine is heading to Dnipropetrovsk in 2 weeks time to personally hand over the leaving packs and wish them all the best as they start a new part of their lives. If you sponsor any of the children listed below and would like a personal gift (or letter) added to their leaving pack then please get in touch and we will ensure that John gets it out to them.

I really do hope that the regular updates and photos, provided for everyone that sponsors a child, really does give a sense of involvement in the lives of these children as they develop and ultimately head out into the world as adults.

One thing for sure is that monthly donations provided by child sponsors makes a huge difference in the lives of these children and the Dnipro Appeal Committee are forever grateful for your continued support, especially during such hard times.

Upcoming Trip to Ukraine and Ira’s Visit

On the 27th of August John Divine will be travelling to Dnipropetrovsk to check on how things are progressing with the Dnipro Kids Baby Centre and also to visit the orphanages to see what differences the support of the Dnipro Appeal has made over the last year.

When John returns on the 1st of September he will be bringing Ira to Edinburgh with him as part of a Dnipro Appeal initiative. The purpose of Ira’s visit, apart from showing her our beautiful country, is to introduce her to some of the organisations that help children and how they work. We already have visits organised with the Aberlour Children’s Charity ( http://www.aberlour.org.uk )

This is an area that you might be able to help us with.

As part of Ira’s training for the Dnipro Kids Baby Centre we would like to try and arrange for her to visit a mother/baby group to see the sort of help and advice that is provided for pregnant women in this country. We would be very grateful to anyone that could help point us in the direction of mother/baby organisations, or could possibly share their experiences, to help us show potential differences between here and Ukraine.
Please email either myself or John Divine at steven@dniprokids.com or john@thornybankwoodcraft.co.uk

Thank you all for your continued support of the orphaned children in Dnipropetrovsk.

Yours,
Steven Carr,
Dnipro Appeal Committee.
