June Update
Childrens Day at the orphanages
On the 1st of June Ukraine celebrated “Children’s Day”. The actual translation, I’ve been informed, is “The Day of Protection of the Children” and both the Odinkovka and the Tabachnaya orphanages celebrated this day.
Tabachnaya Orphanage Celebrations
Luckily for us the Tabachnaya orphanage decided to have their celebrations a day early which meant that Ira was able to attend the celebrations of both orphanages. The reason it was brought forward a day was to allow a local TV station come in and record the event for a local news feature on the television the next day.
Ira actually took centre stage right at the very beginning of the celebration as she firstly presented the orphanage with a selection of toys. Skateboards for the boys, dolls for the girls and a selection of drawing and painting utensils for them all to share. The main gift from the Dnipro Appeal though, that the director had been dreaming about for a long time, were two microphones and speaker systems that the kids could use for their shows and their karaoke sessions.
After presenting the toys Ira then went on to hand out sweets and snicker bars to all the children. The local TV crew and journalists that were in attendance were very interested in Ira’s activities and were intrigued to hear of the Scottish football supporters that were helping the children of the orphanage from afar.
A number of the children had been practicing various dancing, singing and talent routines to be included in the days celebrations. Ira tells us that the routines were excellent and it was obvious that the kids had really put a lot of effort into getting them right for the day.
In return for the effort put in by the kids, the orphanage director organised some clowns to ensure that there was plenty of fun and frolics in between performances. Ira tells us that the clowns did a fantastic job to ensure that the kids had a special day to remember.
Odinkovka Orphanage Celebrations
The next day Ira headed out to the Odinkovka orphanage as the orphanage director had invited Ira, along with local clergy and businessmen, to join in the children’s celebrations.
Ira, of course, didn’t go empty handed and presented the orphanage with almost identical gifts she’d given the day before at Tabachnaya, the only difference being she also gave a small scooter for the kids to play with.
As at Tabachnaya, the Odinkovka kids put on various shows and routines that they had been prepared for the day. From dancing to poetry reading and from singing to story telling, Ira tells us that the kids and their gathered guests had a fantastic day.
And at the end of it all the kids all gathered together to say a huge thank you to everyone in Scotland that is thinking of them and giving them gifts.
Yours,
Steven Carr,
Dnipro Appeal Committee.
