Steven Carr Interview - Hibernian Matchday Magazin

Talking to the matchday magazine this week, Steven Carr said: "The organisation was mainly through the supporter's message boards on the internet web sites, and the cash that was raised then purchased things like badly needed medical equipment and chairs. It also allowed us to buy items to keep the children happy with a TV, DVD player and a nice selection of DVD's and games to keep them occupied on cold winter days. And if Dnepropetrovsk produces the next World Table Tennis Champion it may well be down to the kindness of the Hibernian support!

We also managed a few extra treats for the kids, they all now proudly sport Hibernian colours thanks to donations of Hibernian shirts, hats, scarves and such like! And thanks to donations from Lees and Barr's and they have also had a taste of the terracing classics of Tablet and Macaroon Bars, washed down with the "Other Scottish National Drink" more commonly known as Irn Bru!"

The initial contact was made by Steven with an aid worker at the Dnepropetrovsk orphanage, and that contact has been maintained since with the Hibernian supporters determined that their efforts should not simply stop with Hibernian's exit from the UEFA Cup competition this year. Steven said: "Everyone involved agreed that there was much more we could and should do for the kids. So we are looking again for the support of the Hibernian community to ensure that Dnepropetrovsk is firmly on the visiting list of Santa Clause, or rather Father Frost as he is better known in the Ukraine.

"We still have some funds as a knock-on from our initial appeal. There has been around £350 raised simply by asking Hibernian supporters who had returned home with Ukrainian currency to hand it in to the Easter Road ticket office address for the matchday magazine editor, and if anyone still has any of that currency in their wallets we would appreciate it if they donated it to us! We have also had a number of auctionable items donated to the cause and are organising a series of fundraising events via the existing Hibernian web sites, with the ability to make direct on-line donations through these sites or even through our own site (soon to be launched at www.dniprokids.com)."

Steven aims to return to the Ukraine around Christmas, despite sub-zero temperatures, to deliver another batch of goodwill from the Hibernian community, proving yet again that, as important as the game of football is in our lives, we never allow it to overshadow even more important work that needs to be done to make the world a better place for those in a less fortunate position than ourselves.
